The Clash of Tradition and Modernity in Islam Today

Why are many followers of Islam around the world at war with the West and with each other?  Come hear Andrea Farsakh, a State Department specialist in Middle Eastern Affairs, trace the roots of current conflicts and offer the perspective of one who has lived and worked in many Middle Eastern countries on such issues as women in Islam, holy war, and the Sunni-Shia divide.  After a 25-year career in the foreign service, Mrs. Farsakh now works post-retirement as an Economic Assistance Officer in the State Department’s Office of Iraq.  An experienced lecturer on Islam and Islamic history, she will address the complex issues underlying the tensions in Islam today.

The program at 11 a.m. in the Activity Room will be preceded by coffee and conversation at 10 a.m. and a business meeting at 10:30.  A catered lunch ($7) will be served at noon.  Members, please return phone-tree requests for lunch reservations.  If you are not called by noon on Sunday, March 4, or must cancel a reservation, notify Phyllis Lehner (703-329-0699).  Guests are welcome to attend the program and may also reserve for the luncheon by March 4.
