Four
& Five-Year Olds (11:15):
Chalice
Children
Description
This curriculum is designed
to help young children learn about their church and their congregation
through rituals, rhymes, chants, stories, and activities. The experiences
and messages of the curriculum are intended to affirm young children in
their spiritual growth, creativity, and conection to our congregations.
Content, Values, and Goals
During the year, the teachers strive for a safe, happy, and interesting
classroom, so that children are willing and anxious to share their thoughts
without fear of criticism. By the end of the year, children will also
understand that circle time is time for quiet sharing; that our church
is the "Unitarian Universalist" church; and that Unitarian Universalists
place particular value on certain principles (the UU principles). Hopefully,
the children will increase their sensitivity toward needs of others and
begin to understand that sharing, giving and helping are valued traits.

Five‑Year
Olds (9:15):
We
Are Many, We Are One
Description
This curriculum is based on
the philosophy that young children learn about religion through relationships.
It offers young children the opportunity to learn about their religious
community and tradition, as well as the freedom to discover and express
their uniqueness.
The curriculum is designed
with an anti-bias approach which seeks to prevent children from developing
prejudices and stereotypic ideas. By creating a multicultural environment,
this program teaches children to acknowledge and appreciate interpersonal
differences. The curriculum also encourages democratic ideals. Teachers
are encouraged to include children in decision-making. Children are encouraged
to make choices, to act on their choices and to work-play cooperatively.
The four major units in this
program encourage children to use their minds, bodies, and emotions to
develop their sense of identity and self-esteem within their Unitarian
Universalist community and their world. The units are titled: “We Tell
Unitarian Universalist Stories, We Live Unitarian Universalist Ways,”
“Nature Gives us Gifts, Nature Needs Our Care,” “We Are Alike, We Are
Different” and “We Learn from One Another, We Celebrate Life.”
Content, Values, and Goals
The primary goal of this curriculum
is to create an atmosphere that invites religious growth and learning.
The fundamental objectives of this curriculum are for young children to
feel support and affirmation for their individuality; experience a sense
of belonging and importance as members of a group; begin learning how
to help make their class a peaceable and friendly place; and connect with
the classroom and congregation as an open, straightforward place where
all aspects of life can be discussed.
