UUCA's Green Action
promotes environmental awareness and activism nationally, regionally, and locally. We are seeking certification as a Green Sanctuary from the UU Ministry for the Earth by completing the projects listed below.

Green Sanctuary Action Plans (May 2008)


Worship and Celebration

Ministerial Support Group.
Helps the ministerial team identify environmentally-relevant materials for use in services and help plan seasonal Earth-centered worship services.

Rotating displays of art works highlighting the beauty of nature.

Earth Education and Action
Educational activities such as classes, programs, etc.

“Eat Your Values” Food Events.
Programs featuring low-on-the-food-chain gourmet food and speakers on topics like “nutrition and health,” and “environmental impacts of our food choices.”

The Big Bad Carbon Footprint.  
Buy a compact fluorescent light bulb and we'll put an earth sticker to cover up our carbon footprint.

Environmentally Responsible Investing
Review of church investments from the viewpoint of environmental justice.

Fair Trade Products
A Global Justice Group project to sell in church fair trade products produced in an environmentally responsible manner.

Bikes for the World.  
As part of Working Together Week, collect unwanted bicycles and deliver them to community development programs assisting the poor in developing countries.

Sustainable Living

Eco-Friendly Products
Research, pursue and use eco-friendly products and publicize findings to the congregation.

Wildlife Habitat
Rehabilitate UUCA's habitat garden, adding signage and education materials.

Identify environmentally advanced technologies for church facilities.

Explore the possibility of collective action in order to spur the provision of recycling service to public-interest entities like churches to support a profitable service.

Global Justice

Global Justice encourages changes in U.S. consumer habits to support sustainable agricultural practices worldwide. We sell Equal Exchange Fair Trade coffee, tea and chocolate once a month during Fellowship Hour.

Global Justice is developing a program to sponsor a human rights monitor for indigenous groups opposing destructive gold mining and other practices in Guatemala.

Global Justice meetings are held first Wednesdays from 7:30 to 9:00 pm

Compassion for Creatures

Compassion for Creatures recognizes the interdependence of all beings and that every form of life has value regardless of its worth to human beings. This group works to instill the recognition that to own, manage, and use natural resources comes with the duty to prevent harm to the web of life.

Compassion for Creatures meetings are held on the second Tuesdays 7:30 pm.
